Lebanese movies are recently achieving a growing success and many have been nominated for international awards. These movies are a great way to know more about the local society. In this episode, Rana and Khaled are trying to decide what movie to watch. They suggest different titles and highlight what they like best about each of them. رنا: خاي! منيح خلص هالنهار الطويل. شو رأيك يا خالد نعمل شويّة بوشار ونحضر فيلم سوا الليلة؟
Rana: Yey! It’s good that this long day is over. What do you think of preparing some popcorn and watching a movie together tonight?
خالد: إيه إلنا زمان ما عملنا هيك قعدة. عم فكّر بشي فيلم عن الأبطال الخارقة أو الـsuperheroes متل ما منقلّن بالإنكليزي.
Khaled: Yes it’s been a while that we haven’t had such a sitting. I am thinking of some movie about al’abtal alkharika or superheroes like we call them in English.
رنا: لا كلّ مرّة إنت بتنقّي أفلام أجنبيّة. هالمرّة دوري! عبالي نحضر فيلم لبناني. بعرف إنّو منّك وحيد، الجمهور اللبناني بشكل عامّ بتابع الأفلام الغربية والأميركية أكتر من ما بيحضر الأفلام المحلية، لأنّو معودين عليها أكتر. وبرأيي السبب الرئيسي لهالأفضليّة هو الإختلاف اللي كتير كبير بالإنتاج بين لبنان وهوليوود مثلًا: صنّاع السينما اللبنانيّة معدودين، لأنّو بخافوا يخسروا مصرياتن بهيك إستثمار. بس هالشي ما بيمنع إنّو صار في إنتاج لعدّة أفلام لبنانيّة بتستحق إنها تنحضر.
Rana: No you choose foreign movies every time. This time it’s my turn! I feel like watching a Lebanese movie. I know you’re not the only one, the Lebanese audience in general watch Western and American movies more than they watch local ones, simply because they are more used to them. And in my opinion, the main reason for this preference is the very big difference in production between Lebanon and Hollywood for example: Lebanese filmmakers are only a few, because they fear losing their money in such an investment. But this hasn’t prevented many Lebanese movies worth watching from being produced.
خالد: ما تفهميني غلط! معوّد إحضر أفلام أجنبيّة أكتر بس في كم مخرج وعمل لبناني بحبّن كتير. منّن زياد الدويري، يلّي اشتغل على عدّة أفلام أهمّها بيروت الغربيّة وقضيّة رقم 23. فيلم قضيّة رقم 23 أو The Insult متل ما معروف إسمو بالإنكليزي لاقى نجاح عالمي وترشّح لجايزة الأوسكار عن فئة أفضل فيلم أجنبي لعام 2018. بس إذا بدّي نقّي بين التنين، بفضّل نحضر الليلة فيلم بيروت الغربيّة أو West Beirut، اللي إلو مكانة مميّزة عندي. أبطال هالفيلم هنّي 3 مراهقين: طارق، عمر ومي يلّي عم يجربوا يكفّوا حياتن اليوميّة ببداية الحرب اللبنانيّة سنة 1975. كتير حلو كيف من خلال مغامراتن الشبابيّة، منقدر نتعرّف عمأساة بيروت بهداك الوقت.
Khaled: Don’t misunderstand me! I am more used to watching foreign movies but there are some Lebanese directors and works that I really love. Among them is Ziad Doueiry, who worked on several movies, with the most important ones being West Beirut and Kadiyya Ra’m 23 [Case Number 23]. Kadiyya Ra’m 23 or The Insult as its title is known in English met international success and was nominated for the Oscar Award of the best foreign film category for the year 2018. But if I want to choose between the two of them, I would prefer to watch watch tonight the movie Beirut ElGharbiyye or West Beirut, which has a special place in my heart. The protagonists of this film are 3 teenagers: Tarek, Omar and May, who are trying to continue their daily lives at the beginning of the Lebanese war in 1975. It is so nice how, through their youthful adventures, we can get to know the tragedy of Beirut at that time.
رنا: إيه حاضرتو وكتير بتأثّر بقدّي تمثيلن حقيقي. بس شو رأيك بدل فيلم لزياد الدويري نحضر شي عمل لنادين لبكي؟! فيلمها كفرناحوم كمان ترشّح لجايزة الأوسكار سنة 2019… بس كتير حزين: بصوّر المعاناة الموجودة بأفقر الأحياء اللبنانيّة والمشاكل اللي بتواجها عائلات اللاجئين. بفضّل نحضرلها فيلم سكّر بنات اللي معروف عالميًّا بإسم Caramel. بينقل هالفيلم المشاكل الشخصيّة والإجتماعيّة لـ 5 نساء لبنانيّات، متل العلاقات العاطفيّة الممنوعة، التقاليد العائليّة، تقبّل التقدّم بالعمر وإختيار الواجب أو الرغبات الشخصيّة. أمّا فيلم هلّأ لوين Where Do We Go Now، كمان لنادين لبكي، فهو أحد الأفلام المفضّلة عندي. بخبّر الفيلم قصّة أهالي مسيحيّين ومسلمين ساكنين بضيعة صغيرة، بعيدة عن باقي المناطق. لمّا تبلّش المشاكل الطائفيّة بباقي المناطق، بتجرّب صبايا وإمّات هالضيعة يعملوا المستحيل ليحافظوا عالسلام بين عيلهن.
Rana: Yes I’ve watched it and I get so touched by how genuine their acting is. But what do you think of watching, instead of a movie by Ziad Doueiry, a work by Nadine Labaki? Her movie Capernaum was also nominated for an Oscar Award in the year 2019… But it’s so sad: it pictures the misery present at the poorest Lebanese neighborhoods and the problems that refugees’ families face. I prefer to watch her movie Sekkar Banet [sugar girls] that is internationally known under the title of Caramel. This movie depicts the personal and social problems of 5 Lebanese women, such as forbidden love relationships, family traditions, the acceptance of aging and the choice between duty and personal desires. As for the movie Halla’ La Wen [now, to where] Where Do We Go Now, also by Nadine Labaki, it is one of my favorite movies. It narrates the story of Christian and Muslim families living in a small village, far from the rest of the regions. When sectarian problems arise in the rest of the regions, the young women and mothers of this village do the impossible to maintain peace among their families.
خالد: مظبوط، الموضوع مستوحى من الحرب الأهليّة والإنقسامات الطائفيّة اللي موجودين بمجتمعنا. بذكّرني شوي بفيلم بيروت الغربيّة، بس تفاصيل القصّة وطريقة المعالجة مختلفين. عالأرجح حبّيتو هلقد لأنّو الأبطال كلّن نساء! بتذكر لما حضرت هالفيلم بالسينما، عجبتني الموسيقى التصويريّة تبعو، حضّرها زوجها لنادين: خالد مزنّر. واللي لفتلي نظري كمان كيف قدرت نادين لبكي تمزج الكوميديا بالدراما: بمشهد منضحك وبالتاني منبكي. بس بتعرفي شو؟ ما عبالي إحضر فيلم بحزّن، بفضّل ننقّي شي كوميدي أكتر. عندك فكرة شو معقول يكون؟
Khaled: True, the topic is inspired by the civil war and the sectarian divisions that exist in our society. It slightly reminds me of the movie West Beirut, but the details of the story and the way it’s treated are different. I probably love it so much because the protagonists are all women! I remember when I watched this movie in the cinema, I liked its film score, which is prepared by Nadine’s husband: Khaled Muzannar. What also caught my attention was how Nadine Labaki was able to combine comedy and drama: we laugh in one scene and cry in the other. But do you know what? I don’t feel like watching a sad movie, I prefer we select something more comedic. Do you have an idea what it could be?
رنا: ممم شو رأيك بفيلم محبس؟ أو Solitaire إذا سامع إسمو بالإنكليزي. انعرض بلبنان سنة 2017، من تأليف وإخراج صوفي بطرس. الرسالة الرئيسيّة هي التعصّب الموجود عند البعض منّا وليه لازم نتخطّى مشاكل الماضي ورفض الآخر. ومع إنّو الموضوع هلقد عميق، بس الحوار كتير سلس والمواقف معقول تصير مع أيّ حدا منّا، إذا قرّر يرتبط بشخص من غير جنسيّة أو غير دين وأهلو ما وافقوا. بيحكي الفيلم عن قصّة حبّ بين غادة وسامر، يلّي بقرّروا يتزوّجوا ويلبسوا خاتم المحبس. بس المشاكل بتبلّش لمّا تتعرّف إمّها لغادة عالعريس وعيلتو وتكتشف إنن منّن لبنانيّي! ردّة فعلها بتضحّك والعلاقة بين العيلتين فيها شوي توتّر أو tension بس مهضومة.
Rana: Mmm what do you think of the movie Mahbas [wedding ring]? Or Solitaire if you’ve heard its title in English. It was released in Lebanon in 2017, written and directed by Sophie Boutros. The main message is the intolerance that exists among some of us and why we must overcome the problems of the past and the rejection of the other. And although the topic is this deep, the dialogue is very smooth, and the situations could happen to any of us, if they decide to have a relationship with a person from a different nationality or a different religion and their parents aren’t acceptant of it. The film talks about a love story between Ghada and Samer, who decide to get married and wear a wedding ring. But the problems start when Ghada’s mother meets the groom and his family and discovers that they are not Lebanese! Her reaction is funny and the relationship between the two families has some tawattor or tension, but it is entertaining.
خالد: يعني ما قلتيها… بس واضح إنو الفيلم رومنسي-كوميدي! وعم تجرّبي ما بتخبّريني بشكل مباشر لأنّو بتعرفيني ما بحبّ هالنوع من الأفلام، الـrom-coms متل ما منقلّن بالإنكليزي. اسمعي يا رنا أيّ فيلم لازم نحضر: اسمعي – هو هيك إسمو! للمخرج اللبناني فيليب عرقتنجي. وأنا بعرف كيف فيّي إقنعك فيه: بطلة الفيلم إسمها رنا، متلك! بيحكي كمان عن قصّة حبّ متل القصص اللي بتحبّيهن، بين رنا وجود اللي فيه فوارق إجتماعيّة كبيرة بيناتن. لقيت أحداث القصّة بطيئة شوي بس اللي كتير عجبني هو التركيز على الصوت. هالنقطة عامل أساسي بالفيلم لأنّو جود بصير يسجّل أصوات بيروت ويسمّعها ياهن لحبيبتو.
Khaled: So you didn’t say it … but it is clear that the movie is a romantic-comedy one! And you are trying not to directly tell me because you know that I don’t like this genre of movies, the rom-coms, like we call them in English. Listen Rana what movie we should watch: Listen – this is its title! It is by the Lebanese director Philip Aractingi. And I know how to convince you about it: the protagonist of the movie is named Rana, just like you! It also talks about a love story just like the ones you love, between Rana and Joud who have big social differences between them. I found the story’s events to be a bit slow, but what I liked the most about it is the focus on the sound. This point is an essential factor in the film because Joud starts recording Beirut’s sounds and having his sweetheart listen to them.
رنا: بفضّل إتركو لغير ليلة. بتتذكّر آخر مرّة حكينا فيها عن الدبكة وحضرنا من بعدها فيلم البوسطة؟ كان لنفس المخرج: فيليب عرقتنجي. فخلينا هالمرّة نغيّر شوي الأسلوب وبلكي نحضر فيلم… غدي! المخرج هو أمين درة وأحد الأبطال هو ممثّلك المفضّل: جورج خبّاز – أو ليبا متل ما إسمو بالفيلم. ليبا هو الراوي اللي بخبّرنا عن إبنو غدي اللي بعاني من متلازمة داون، أو الـdown syndrome. ولأنّو أهالي الحيّ ما بيتقبّلوا إختلاف هالصبي، بجرّب البيّ يقنعن يحبّوه بطريقة ذكيّة ومهضومة. لمّا حضرت الفيلم، لقيت غدي كتير قريب عالقلب وخلّاني فكّر بكتير أمور متل الإيمان، الجهل، الإختلاف.
Rana: I prefer to leave it to another night. Do you remember the last time we talked about Dabke and watched afterwards the Bosta [Bus] movie? It was by the same director: Philippe Aractingi. So let’s change the style a bit this time and maybe watch the movie… Ghadi! The director is Amine Dora, and one of the protagonists is your favorite actor: George Khabbaz – or Liba, is he is called in the movie. Liba is the narrator who tells us about his son Ghadi who suffers from mutalezamit down, or Down syndrome. And because the neighborhood’s residents don’t accept the difference of this boy, his father tries to convince them of loving him in a smart and fun way. When I watched the movie, I found Ghadi to be very sweet and it made me think of many topics such as faith, ignorance, and difference.
خالد: طيب رنا ما زال حاضرتيه، مش عبالك تشوفي شي جديد؟ أنا برأيي ننقّي فيلم مش حاضرو حدا منّا من قبل. في كتير أفلام لبنانيّة بقولوا إنّها حلوة، متل: لمّا حكيت مريم، خبصة، غدا العيد، SL Film، مورين، تحت القصف وغيرها. ما زال مش حاضر ولا واحد منن، رح إتركك إنت تنقّي!
Khaled: Okey Rana since you have watched it, don’t you want to see something new? In my opinion, let’s choose a movie that none of us has watched before. There are many Lebanese movies that are said to be nice, such as: Lamma Hekyit Maryam – When Maryam Spoke Out; Khabsa [Mess]- What Did I Miss; Ghada El Eid [Holiday Lunch] – Heaven Without People; SL Film; Morine; Tahet El Assef – Under the Bombs; and others. Since I haven’t watched any of them, I’ll let you choose!
رنا: تمام. رح شوف شو بلاقي منّن عالإنترنت. بتقدر خالد بهالوقت إنت تحضّر البوشار؟
Rana: Perfect. I will see what I can find of them on the internet. Can you Khaled in the meantime prepare popcorn?
