Lebanese movies are recently achieving a growing success and many have been nominated for international awards. These movies are a great way to know more about the local society. In this episode, Rana and Khaled are trying to decide what movie to watch. They suggest different titles and highlight what they like best about each of them. رنا: خاي! منيح خلص هالنهار الطويل. شو رأيك يا خالد نعمل شويّة بوشار ونحضر فيلم سوا الليلة؟
Rana: Yey! It’s good that this long day is over. What do you think of preparing some popcorn and watching a movie together tonight?
خالد: إيه إلنا زمان ما عملنا هيك قعدة. عم فكّر بشي فيلم عن الأبطال الخارقة أو الـsuperheroes متل ما منقلّن بالإنكليزي.
Khaled: Yes it’s been a while that we haven’t had such a sitting. I am thinking of some movie about al’abtal alkharika or superheroes like we call them in English.
رنا: لا كلّ مرّة إنت بتنقّي أفلام أجنبيّة. هالمرّة دوري! عبالي نحضر فيلم لبناني. بعرف إنّو منّك وحيد، الجمهور اللبناني بشكل عامّ بتابع الأفلام الغربية والأميركية أكتر من ما بيحضر الأفلام المحلية، لأنّو معودين عليها أكتر. وبرأيي السبب الرئيسي لهالأفضليّة هو الإختلاف اللي كتير كبير بالإنتاج بين لبنان وهوليوود مثلًا: صنّاع السينما اللبنانيّة معدودين، لأنّو بخافوا يخسروا مصرياتن بهيك إستثمار. بس هالشي ما بيمنع إنّو صار في إنتاج لعدّة أفلام لبنانيّة بتستحق إنها تنحضر.
Rana: No you choose foreign movies every time. This time it’s my turn! I feel like watching a Lebanese movie. I know you’re not the only one, the Lebanese audience in general watch Western and American movies more than they watch local ones, simply because they are more used to them. And in my opinion, the main reason for this preference is the very big difference in production between Lebanon and Hollywood for example: Lebanese filmmakers are only a few, because they fear losing their money in such an investment. But this hasn’t prevented many Lebanese movies worth watching from being produced.
