Sabah is one of Lebanon’s most iconic singers and movie stars. She is famous for the beauty and power of her voice and her larger than life persona both onscreen and in real life. She grew up in Lebanon and launched her singing and acting career in Egypt but her music reached every corner of the Middle East and well beyond.

Hello, I’m Dareen. In today’s episode, we will talk about the legend of legends, the most beautiful of all beauties. A lady from Lebanon who holds many titles, such as “The Voice of Lebanon”, “Al-Sabbouha”, and “The Legend.” She was one of the first female artists to sing on the world’s most famous theaters. Follow us with a special and fun episode about Sabah.

قبل ما بلش، لازم قول عن كمية الحماس اللي حسيت فيه لما بلشت حضر لهالحلقة. لأنو “صباح”، مش بس فنانة عالمية ومشهورة، بس كمان، في بحياتها محطات إنسانية، ومواقف شخصية رائعة، وأخبار، عن علاقتها بفنانين جيلا، بتخلي حياتا متل الصندوق الأسود، اللي مليان حكايا، ما بتساعهن حلقة واحدة.
Before starting, I need to mention the amount of enthusiasm I felt when I started preparing this episode. Because Sabah is not only an international and famous artist; her life also involves humane landmarks, wonderful personal situations, and tales about her relationship with the artists of her generation which makes her life is like a black box filled with stories that don’t fit in one episode.

إسما الحقيقي، جانيت جرجس الفغالي. خلقت بـ 10 تشرين الثاني سنة الـ 1927 بضيعة جبلية مشهورة بجمال أصوات سكانا، وإسما ضيعة وادي شحرور. ومن هون، لقبوا باللقب الأحب على قلبا اللي وهو “الشحرورة” صباح، نسبة لعصفور إسمو الشحرور وعندو صوت رائع.
Her real name is Janet Gerges Al-Faghali. She was born on November 10, 1927 in a mountain village famous for the beautiful voices of its inhabitants, called Wadi Shahrour [literally, Common Blackbird Valley]. That’s why she was given the nickname that she loves the most, Al-Shahroura Sabah. The name Shahrour is that of a bird that has a beautiful voice.

كل الضيعة كانت تعرف مدى جمال صوت صباح. فكانت تشارك بحفلات الضيعة، وتغني على المسرح. ومرة، شافتا منتجة سينمائية لبنانية، اسما آسيا داغ، وأعجبت كتير بجمالا وبصوتا. فطلبتا للقاهرة عاصمة مصر، لتمثل بالسينما المصرية. وهيك بلشت الصبوحة أول خطواتا نحو النجومية.
The whole village knew how beautiful Sabah’s voice was. She participated in the village concerts and sang on stage. Once, a Lebanese film producer named Asia Dagher saw her and was very impressed with her beauty and voice. She requested that Sabah visits Cairo, the capital of Egypt, to act in Egyptian cinema. That’s how she started her first steps to stardom.

المنتجة آسيا داغر، كلفت الملحن المصري المشهور رياض السنباطي، إنو يمرن صوتا. وقامو بتغيير إسما من جانيت لصباح. الجدير ذكرو، إنو عما لصباح كان من أشهر الشعراء، وكان لقبو “شحرور الوادي”، فحب الجمهور إنو صباح تحمل لقب كبير، ورنّان، متل عما الشاعر.
Producer Asia Dagher asked the famous Egyptian composer Riad Al-Sunbati to train her [Sabah’s] voice. They changed her name from Janet to Sabah, and later her name became Al-Shahroura Sabah. It is worth mentioning that Sabah’s uncle was one of the most famous poets and his nickname was “Shahrour Al-Wadi”, so fans wanted Sabah to hold a grandiose and resonant title like her uncle the poet.

بما إنو مصر أم الدنيا، ومنبر كبير لينطلق منو كل الفنانين العرب، لاقت صباح نجوميّتا بمصر، وهي الفتاة الشقرا، الطويلة القامة، والجميلة الوجه والرائعة الصوت، وتهافتو علَيَا المخرجين والممثلين. وصارت صباح إسم كبير بين نجوم السينما.
Since Egypt is “the mother of the world,” and a big platform to launch all Arab artists, Sabah found her stardom in Egypt. She was a tall, blonde girl with a beautiful face and wonderful voice made all directors and actors eager to work with her. Sabah became a big name among movie stars.

قدمت صباح للسينما ما يقارب 100 [مِيِّت] فيلم، خلال مشوارا الفني اللي استمر حوالي نصف قرن (يعني 50 [خمسين] سنة) مع أشهر عمالقة الفن بهيداك الزمن.
Sabah acted in around 100 films during her nearly half-century career with the most famous art giants of that time.

من أبرز أفلاما “القلب له واحد”، مع أنور وجدي. “بلبل أفندي”، مع فريد الأطرش. “ظلموني الحبايب”، مع عماد حمدي. “شارع الحب”، مع عبد الحليم حافظ. و”ليلة بكى فيها القمر”، مع حسين فهمي، واللي يعتبر من روائع السينما الكلاسيكية العربية.
Some of her most notable films are The Heart Has One, with Anwar Wajdi. Bulbul Effendi with Farid al-Atrash.”My lovers were unfair ” with Emad Hamdi. “Love Street” with Abdel Halim Hafez. And “A Night in which the Moon Cried” with Hussein Fahmy, which is considered one of the masterpieces of classical Arab cinema.

مش أبدعت الصبوحة بس بالتمثيل، بل كمان بالغناء. ولحنلا كبار الملحّنين، وكتبلا أشطر الشعراء. ونظرا لعدد الأغاني الكتير اللي انجزتن الصبوحة بحياتا، دخلت موسوعة غينيس، كأكبر إرث فني بالتاريخ، بما يزيد عن 3,000 [تلات آلاف] أغنية.
She did well not only as an actress, but as a singer as well. Great music composers composed her music and the best poets wrote her songs. Due to the large number of songs that Al-Sabbouha accomplished in her life, the Guinness Book of World Records added Sabah as having the largest artistic legacy in history with more than 3,000 songs.

الشحرورة صباح تُعتبر تاني فنانة عربية بعد أم كلثوم، بأواخر الستينات، اللي وقفت وغنت على خشبة مسرح الأوليمبيا بباريس، ودار الأوبرا بسيدني أستراليا، وكتار من مسارح لاس فيغاس والعالم الغربي.
Shahroura Sabah is considered the second Arab artist after Um Kulthoum in the late 1960s to stand and sing on stage at the Olympia Theatre in Paris, the Opera House in Sydney, Australia and many theaters in Las Vegas and the Western world.

أما بالمسرح، فتخطت أعمالا 23 مسرحية، مع عمالقة المسرح الأخوين رحباني، والفنان روميو لحود، وكتار غيرُن. وهالمسرحيات برمت فيها العالم، وعُرضت بأهم المهرجانات المحلية اللبنانية، متل مهرجان بعلبك، وجبيل، وبيت الدين.
As for theater, her plays exceeded 23 plays with the theater giants the Rahbani Brothers, artist Romeo Lahoud and many others. These plays toured the world and were presented at the most important Lebanese local festivals, such as Baalbek, Jbeil and Beiteddine.

من أشهر مسرحياتا، مسرحية “موسم العز”، اللي أدتها بصوتها الجبلي الرائع، مسرحية “دواليب الهوا”، اللي تميزت بدلعا المحبب أثناء أداءا هالعمل، ومسرحية “الأسطورة”، اللي من وراها، أضيف لقب الأسطورة لصباح.
Some of her most famous plays are The Season of Glory, which she performed with her wonderful mountain voice, Pinwheel, which was characterized by her endearing coquetry during her performance of this work, and The Legend, because of which “legend” was added to Sabah’s nicknames.

وأخيرا مسرحية “القلعة”، اللي تقدمت بمعبد قديم بقلعة بعلبك الشهيرة، واللي تعتبر من أهم المراكز السياحية بلبنان، والعالم العربي. وقفت صباح تحت عواميد هالقلعة الجبارة، وغنت فيا واحدة من أهم أغانيا عن القلعة، اللي بتقول:
قلعة كبيرة وقلبا كبير وبيساع الدنيا كِلا
شتقنا عليكي كتير كتير وحلَّا نرجعلك حلّا
Finally, the play The Fortress that was presented in an old temple in the famous Fortress of Baalbek, which is considered one of the most important touristic sites in Lebanon and the Arab world. Sabah stood under the columns of this mighty fortress and sang one of her most important songs, which says:
A big castle with a big heart
That fits the whole world
We miss you very much and it was about time we came back to you

متل كل الفنانين، صارت حياة صباح الشخصية تحت الضوء. وعلى عكس الآخرين، هالشي ما كان يزعجا، وكانت تجاوب على كل الأسئلة عن حياتا الشخصية، بكل صراحة ومحبة.
Like all artists, Sabah’s personal life became in the spotlight. Unlike others, this thing did not bother her, and she answered all questions about her personal life with openness and love.

تزوجت الشحرورة صباح سبع مرات، من مشاهير، وأشخاص عاديين، صاروا مشاهير بعد ارتباطن فيا. من أشهر أزواجا، زوجا الأول نجيب شماس، واللي أنجبت منه ابنا الدكتور صباح شماس. وعازف الكمان المصري أنور منسي، اللي أنجبت منه بنتا الوحيدة هويدا. وفادي لبنان، الكوريغراف الشهير، اللي عاشت معه أطول فترة من حياتا وهي 17 سنة.
Al-Shahroura Sabah married seven times from celebrities and ordinary people who became famous after being associated with her. One of her most famous husbands is her first husband, Najib Shammas, who gave birth to her son Dr. Sabah Shammas, the Egyptian violinist Anwar Mansi, with whom she had her only daughter, Howaida, and Fadi Libnen, the famous choreographer with whom she lived for the longest period of her [married] life, 17 years.

كانت معروفة صباح بكرما الكتير، وصرفا بدون حدود على ضيوفا واحبابا. وكمان، عرفت عنا قسوتا وشدتا بالبيت مع ولادا. وتحديدا بنتها هويدا، اللي من كتر تعلق صباح فيها غنتلا بالمصري :
دي حبيبة أمها يا خواتي بحبها … يا خواتي يا خواتي يا خواتي بحبها … دي حبيبة أمها
Sabah was known for her large generosity and spending without limits on her guests and loved ones. She was also known for being tough and harsh at home with her children. Especially her daughter Howaida; she was so attached to her that she sang to her in Egyptian dialect:
She’s her mother’s love, I love her, people … Oh people, I love her … She’s her mother’s love

هويدا كانت تقول إنو الصبوحة كانت صاحبة الرأي الأخير بالبيت، وكان عندا هيبة وحضور على كل الموجودين. ويمكن قد ما كانت ناجحة، تأثرت فيا بنتا كتير. وحاولت تدخل عالم التمثيل، بس ما حالفا الحظ، وما نجحت كتير، فقررت تسافر، وتقضي حياتا بأميركا.
Howaida used to say that Sabah had the last word at home and had prestige and influence on all those present. She [Howaida] was so influenced by her success. She tried to enter the world of acting but was not lucky and did not do very well, so she decided to travel and spend her life in America.

لما بدنا نحكي عن الاسطورة صباح لازم، نذكر جمالا الأخّاذ، وشعرا الأشقر الطويل، وضحكتا الرنانة المشهورة، اللي كانو محط إعجاب الجماهير. أما أزياءا وفساتينا، فكانت تحدد موضة السنة، وكانت سيدات المجتمع الراقي كلّن يخيّطو متل تياب الصبوحة، وينطرو أي مناسبة ليشوفو طلّتا كيف راح تكون.
When we want to talk about the legend, Sabah, we should mention her stunning beauty, long blond hair and famous resonant laugh that the crowd adored. As for her costumes and dresses, they defined the fashion trend of the year, and the ladies of high society used to sew clothes that were similar to Sabbouha’s and would wait for any occasion to see how she looked.

إهتمام صباح بالموضة، خلاها تصرف الكتير من أموالها أيضا على الملابس، اللي ما زالت عيلتها محتقظة فيهن بحالة جيدة. ويمكن يقرروا يوما ما يبيعوهن بمزاد علني متل كل مشاهير العالم. بعض دور الأزياء، قاموا بإختراع نوع جديد من الأقمشة اللميعة الخاصة بفساتين السهرات وأطلقوا عليه إسم قماش شعر صباح، واللي أنا كمان بفترة من حياتي خيطت فستان منن.
Sabah’s interest in fashion made her spend a lot of her money also on clothes that her family still keeps in a good condition. They may decide one day to sell them at auctions like all the world’s famous people. Some fashion houses have invented a new kind of shiny fabrics for evening dresses and called it Sabah hair cloth, which I also used for my dresses at a certain period of my life.

متاحف كتيرة عملت مجسمات من الشمع لصباح، متل متحف قصر موسى ومتحف مدام توساد بباريس، لتخليدا كواحدة من أقوى حناجر العالم، وصاحبة أطول أوف بتقولها مطربة عربية.
Many museums made wax statues for Sabah such as the Museum of Mousa Castle and the Museum of Madame Tussauds in Paris to immortalize it as one of the strongest voices of the world and the Arabic singer could say the longer Oof.

ولنوضح شو يعني “أوف”، فهي كلمة شعبية لبنانية، بتتكرر ببداية المواويل والموشحات، اللي هني نوع من الأغاني التراثية المحلية. بيشتهرو فيا أبناء الجبل والقرى بلبنان. وبيبلش الموال بكلمة أوف أوف أوف، كنوع من الدعوة للجمهور إنو يسمع. وجرت العادة، إنو المغنيين يمدو كلمة أوف على طول نفسن، كدلالة لرخامة وقوة صوت المغني.
To explain what “Oof”, it is a popular Lebanese word that is repeated at the beginning of the folks poems, which is a kind of local heritage song. They are famous for the mountain people and villages in Lebanon. The poem starts with “Ooof, ooof, ooof,” which is a sort if invitation for the audience to listen. It has been customary for singers to extend the word of themselves as a sign of the singer’s voice majesty and power.

قامت إحدى شركات الإنتاج بتصوير مسلسل عن حياتا سنة 2011، إسمو “الشحرورة”. وكان من بطولة الممثلة والمطربة اللبنانية كارول سماحة. ولكن هويدا، بنت صباح، بتقول إنو ما أعطى هالمسلسل حق لنجومية وفن الشحرورة، وكان في كتير من المعلومات الخاطئة عنا. أما صباح، فالتزمت الصمت، وما علقت متل عادتا بكل حياتا، إنو ما تحكي الا عن الأشياء اللي بتحبا.
In 2011, a production company filmed a series about her life called “Al-Shahroura.” It starred Lebanese actress and singer Carol Samaha. But Howaida, Sabah’s daughter, says that this series was not fair to Al-Shahroura’s stardom and the art, and it had a lot of misinformation about her. As for Sabah, as she would usually do throughout her life, she remained silent and did not comment, because she would only talk about things she liked.

بـ 26 تشرين التاني سنة 2014، توفت صباح عن عمر 87 [سبعة وتمانين] سنة. وتعتبر جنازة الفنانة صباح، من أغرب الجنازات في العالم، لأنا طلبت قبل وفاتا، إنو نهار دفنا يكون يوم فرح وسعادة وما حدا يحزن.
She died on the of 26 November 2014 at the age of 87. Sabah’s funeral is one of the strangest funerals in the world because she asked before her death that the day of her burial would be a day of joy and happiness and that no one grieves.

وهيك صار. تحول يوم وفاتا ليوم مهرجان شعبي حاشد، عزفت فيا أغانيا ورقصت الناس بالشوارع، وكبت على نعشا الورد والرز كدليل على الفرح والسعادة، اللي عاشت كل عمرها تنشرن.
And that’s how it happened. The day of her death turned into a mass popular festival in which her songs were played, and people danced in the streets and threw flowers and rice at her coffin as a sign of the joy and happiness she has lived all her life spreading.

تخلّدت واحدة من صور صباح المشهورة، على أحد أبنية شارع الحمرا الرئيسي، عبر إستخدام فن الغرافيتي. وحواليا للصورة مجموعة من كلمات أغانيها متل، “يانا يانا يا تاعبني”، “ساعات ساعات أحب عمري وأعشق الحاجات”، و”مسّيناكن مسونا وعالبوابة لاقونا وإن زقفتو كتير كتير بتكونو بتحبونا…”
One of Sabah’s photographs has been immortalized on a building on main Hamra street using the art of the Garffiti. Around the photo is a collection of lyrics from her songs, such as You’re Giving Me Hard Time; Sometimes I Love My Life and Adore Things; and “I’ve said ‘Good evening’ so you should do the same and meet me at the gate, and if you clap your hands so much, that means you love me…”
