ماري: ماما ليكي، خلصت الكنزة اللي كنت عم خيطا. رح صير أحلى مصممة أزياء لمّا بلش شغل!
Mary: Mom look, I finished the sweater I was knitting. I will become the best fashion designer when I start working!
الأم: واو برافو حبيبتي، عنجد حلوة. مبين أديه تعبتي عليا ماري… بس عنجد بدك تشتغلي كمصممة أزياء؟ كنت بتوقع تكون هواية، مش أكتر.
Mom: Wow, well done sweetheart. It is really beautiful. It is clear how much effort you have put into it Mary… but is it really that you want to work as a fashion designer? I expected it to be a hobby, not more.
ماري: ليش لأ؟! بلشت الشغلة كهواية، بس اكتشفت إني كتير بنبسط أنا وعم صمم تياب وبحس إني عملت إنجاز لما نفذ هالتصاميم. عم إشتغل كتير عحالي. بكل تواضع، بعتبر حالي موهوبة بهالمجال. وما عم إتكل بس عالموهبة أو الذوق الحلو. بحضر دايمًا فيديويات، بتابع أعمال مصممين محترفين، وبجرب طور مهاراتي أو الـskills تبعي.
Mary: Why not?! It started as a hobby, but I realized that I am very happy when I am designing clothes. I feel like I have made an achievement when I execute these designs. I am working a lot on myself. Very modestly speaking, I consider myself talented in this field, and I am not only depending on talent or good taste. I always watch videos, follow up on professional designers’ work, and try to develop my skills.
الأم: وأنا بشجعك تكفي بهالهمة وبهنيكي على تعبك. بس مش هيدا قصدي. ما عندي شك بمواهبك الفنية، بس ما تنسي كمان أديه عم تبرعي بالمواد العلمية بالمدرسة. من إنت وصغيرة، بتطلعي بين الأول بصفوف الرياضيات، الفيزياء، الكيمياء أو الـmath، physique، chimie، متل ما بسموهن أساتذتك بالفرنساوي. حرام كل هالشطارة ما تدرسي طب أو هندسة بالجامعة.
Mom: I encourage you to keep up this energy, and I congratulate you on your effort; but this is not what I mean. I have no doubt in your artistic talents, but do not forget how brilliant you are also in scientific subjects at school. Ever since you were a little girl, you ranked among the top students in the classes of math, physiques, and chemistry (math, physique, chimie) as your teachers call them in French. It is a waste with all this excellence not to study medicine or engineering at university.
ماري: كنت عارفة إنو بدك تقولي هيك! أغلب الأهل بلبنان بدن ولادن يطلعو مهندسين، حكما أو محامية. كأن ما فينا ننجح بغير مجالات! مزبوط إني شاطرة بالمواد العلمية، بس بدرسن لأن لازم إدرسن ولأن بحب حافظ على علامات عالية. بس فعليًا، بلاقي حالي بعالم الموضة بين الألوان، القماش، الموديلات.
Mary: I knew you were going to say this! Most parents in Lebanon want their kids to become engineers, doctors, or lawyers. As if we cannot succeed in other fields! It is true that I am good in scientific subjects, but I study them only because I have to and because I like to maintain good grades. But in fact, I find myself in the fashion world between colors, fabric, and styles.
الأم: طيب ما تتخلي عن هالعالم بشكل كامل، وخليكي عم تتسلي فيه من وقت للتاني. متل خيك، بحب كتير يعزف عالدربكة، بس ما صار عازف محترف وعم يدرس هندسة بالجامعة. برأيي، لازم يكون شغلك الأساسي بمجال مضمون وأرباحو المادية ثابتة.
Mom: Well do not give up entirely on this world and keep enjoying it from time to time. Just like your brother. He really loves to play the darbuka, but he did not become a professional musician, and he is studying engineering in university. In my opinion, your main job should be in a guaranteed field with a stable financial income.
ماري: ماما، خيي حر ياخد القرارات اللي بتريحو. وأنا كمان. أنا ما بشوف حالي عم بشتغل بمكتب هندسة من 8 للـ5، ولا بمستشفى كل الليل. ما بقدر إشتغل كل حياتي بمجال ما كون شغوفة فيه. رح كون كتير تعيسة وروح كل يوم عالشغل غصب عني!
Mary: Mom, my brother is free to take the decisions that please him, and I am too. I do not see myself working in an engineering office from 8 to 5, nor in a hospital all night long. I cannot work all my life in a field I am not passionate about. I will be miserable and force myself to go to work every day.
الأم: معك حق ماري، ما لازم قارنك بخيك ولا إضغط عليكي. بس أنا عتلانة همك. ما بدي ياكي ما تلاقي شغل لما تتخرجي من الجامعة. أو تتوظفي ويطلع معاشك كتير واطي وتندمي عقرارك. إنت بتستاهلي كل النجاح وبدي ياكي تحققيه!
Mom: You are right Mary. I should not compare you to your brother nor pressure you. I am only worried about you. I do not want you to find no job when you graduate, nor to get hired for a very low salary and regret your decision. You deserve all the success, and I want you to achieve it!
ماري: شكرًا ماما، بس بدك ياكي توثقي فيي أكتر. بعدين شكلك ناسية كم شخص عم يتخرج كمحامي أو مهندس وما عم يلاقي شغل؟ التحديات موجودة وين ما كان. أنا بآمن إنو إذا شخص عمل اللي بحبو وتعب عحالو، بيقدر ينجح. أد ما كانت صعبة ظروفو! ما في شي بيجي بالهين، مش إنت هيك علمتينا؟

I believe that if a person did what he loves and invested in himself, he can succeed no matter how hard his circumstances were! Nothing comes easy. Didn’t you teach us this?

ماري: أكيد! فيي بلش شغل بدار أزياء محلي. فيي صمم تياب وبيعن عالإنستغرام. فيي سافر لبرا، كفي علمي بمدن عالمية متل باريس أو ميلانو.
Mary: Sure! I can start working at a local fashion house. I can design clothes and sell them on Instagram. I can travel abroad to continue my education in international cities like Paris or Milano.
