Christmas as a holiday is celebrated around the globe but there is always room for cultural differences in celebrations, tales, and customs. Lebanese Christmas celebrations include bounteous food spreads with family, Santa visits, big lit up Christmas trees, and goodies filled holiday markets. مرحبا! أنا ريا، وأهلا وسهلا فيكن بحلقة اليوم. قرّب عيد الميلاد وبلّشت هالفكرة تخطر عراسنا لا إرادياً كذا مرة بالنهار، بالشغل، بالبيت، لما نكون ضاهرين مع أصحابنا. وكإنو الولد اللي جواتنا ببلّش ينق عأهلو، يعني عقلنا الرّاشد، إنو يسرعولو الوقت وتجي هالفرصة و خلص! وبما إنو أنا وعم حضر هالحلقة، شكلو الولد اللي فيي عم يتغلب على عقلي الراشد، قررت إحكي عن عيد الميلاد بنسختو اللبنانة، أو كيف منعيّد الميلاد بلبنان.
Hello! I am Rea. Welcome to today’s episode. Christmas is near, and this idea started popping into our head involuntarily several times a day; at work, at home, when we are out with friends. As if the child inside us starts nagging at its parents, which means our adult mind, to speed up time, and that this vacation just comes already! And since my inner child seems to be taking over my adult mind while I am preparing this episode, I have decided to talk about the Lebanese version of Christmas, or how we celebrate Christmas in Lebanon.

أول شي، بيتهيألي إنو عيد الميلاد ببلش شوي أبكر عنا من غير بلدان. شي إنو تشتي الدني ونفوت بأول أيام تشرين التاني، ببلشو البلدات والضيع يزينو شوارعن ومراكزن وكنايسن. حتى إنن بيسبقو المدن عهالشي. أمّا المدن، فقصة تانية. بفضل التمويل يللي بيتأمنلن، بفوتو المدن الكبرى اللبنانية بمسابقة معنوية وضمنية: أيا مدينة شجرتا أحلى وأكبر وخلاقة أكتر، وهيدا الشي إجمالاً بصير بين المدن السياحية الكبرى، متل زحلة، جبيل. وببلشو اللبنانية يحددو مواعيد، ويخصصو مشاوير لمجرد إنو يزورو هالمدينة أو هيديك، ويتفرجو عالزينة. وأهم شي! يتصورو قدّام الشجرة.
First, it seems to me that Christmas starts a bit earlier here than in other countries. As soon as it rains and we enter the first days of November, towns and village begin to decorate their streets, centers, and churches. They even precede cities in this. Whereas in the cities, it is another story. Thanks to the funding that is secured for them, big Lebanese cities enter a spiritual and implicit competition: which city has the most beautiful, biggest, and most creative tree. This thing generally takes place between big touristic cities such as Zahlé, Byblos. The Lebanese people start setting dates and designating trips just to visit this city or that, check out the decoration, and the most important thing! Take pictures in front of the tree.
