Lebanon’s public transportation sector is made up of a hodgepodge of official and informal buses, minivans, and taxis. Most have known (but not well marked) stops and all can be hailed at almost any point along their routes. Taxi drivers around their word are famous for their ability to chat up customers but Lebanese taxis can probably out chat them all. In this episode, Mariam gives us a few insights about public transportation in Lebanon based on her own experiences. Sit back and enjoy the trip!

كتير أيام بلبنان، حتى لو عندك سيارة خاصة أو مستأجرا، رح تفضل تاخد أي وسيلة نقل عام لتتنقل ببيروت أو بين المناطق المختلفة. ليش عم قول هيك؟ السبب الأول هو العجقة عالطرقات. أما السبب التاني والأهم، هو تحدي إنك تلاقي صفة للسيارة خاصة بمناطق بيروت المزدحمة. ومزدحمة يعني عاجقة.
Many days in Lebanon, even you had a private or rented car, you will prefer to take any means of public transportation to move around in Beirut or between different areas. Why am I saying this? The first reason is the traffic on the streets. As for the second and more important reason, it is the challenge of finding a parking spot for the car, especially in the crowded areas of Beirut.

Public transportation is public means of transportation for all people owned by the government, while shared transportation is means of transportation owned by people or private companies. These means could be cars, buses, Bosta, vans, or trains. Do not get too optimistic because I mentioned trains. Till now, we still do not have trains in Lebanon, but we are still hoping to again have them.
