Episode 13 – Arabized Turkish words

Arabized Turkish Words in the Lebanese Dialect

Lebanon was part of the Ottoman Empire for about 400 years and, naturally, Lebanese people absorbed many Turkish words from that time. Although Ottoman rule in Lebanon ended after World War I, reminders of that time abound if you know how and where to spot them. In this episode, Mariam tells us about Arabized Turkish words that are now part of the Lebanese dialect.

These vocabulary or words are special because they are not originally Arabic words, but we use them as if they were Arabic. This means they are Arabized. These words were added to the language due to certain events that took place in Lebanon in the past, and specifically those we will be speaking about today were added to our language during the Ottoman rule of Lebanon. Back then, Lebanon’s name was not yet “Lebanon”. It was called “Belad Al-Sham” (Levant region) along with Syria, Palestine, and Jordan, before the Sykes-Picot division.
