Episode 6 – Modern poetry scene

Lebanon has a small but vibrant poetry scene. In Beirut and other cities you can find poetry reading nights, open mic events, and local poetry magazines and journals. Poetry has a long history in the country and a new generation of poets are keeping those traditions alive while renewing them at the same time. Siba tells us about the growing poetry scene in Lebanon.

Welcome our listeners with me Siba. As you know, Lebanon’s history is prominent for its writers and poets whom we love and take pride in up to this day, such as Said Akl, Gibran Khalil Gibran, Moussa Sheaib and many more. The Lebanese society encourages a lot this kind of culture, and the rising generation, which is the youth generation, is not failing in reviving this beautiful art and reminding us of it.

For this reason, literary journals started working with the Lebanese young men and ladies in 2012 to revive modern poetry around Lebanon once again. Thus, the literary journals provided print platforms like books, magazines, and poetry collections. Also, and in order to help with this project, contributors made social publications available for the purpose of building and developing the poetry scene.
